Pace’s head coach Joe Zaccheo talks to players in during a time out in the second quarter as the Monsignor Edward Pace High School takes on Miami Edison Senior High School at Traz Powell Stadium in North Miami on Saturday, October14, 2017. pportal@miamiherald.com

Joe Zaccheo and Monsignor Pace High School have been two things linked for a very long time. But that will be no more at the end of the school year as Zaccheo announced this week that he will be stepping down not only as the coach of the football team but in his role as longtime athletic director at the school as well.

“I am a very lucky man to be at one school my whole career,” said Zaccheo, who arrived at Pace in 1988 as head JV coach and as an assistant coach under Mark Guandolo. “I have had great principals that were supportive of me and the program. Someone once told me that you know when it’s time to go. Well, my time is now.”

Zaccheo eventually took over as the head coach of the football team in 1996 and assumed the role of athletic director a year later. The success in his first 11 seasons (1996-2006), was remarkable as he took over a team that was 3-7 in 1995 and proceeded to go 10-2 in 1996 and 110-28 during that span. That included four state semifinal appearances (1998, 1999, 2003, 2004) and a Class 3A state championship in 2003 when the Spartans upset Jacksonville Bolles.

After stepping down from his football duties following the 2006 season to concentrate solely on his role as the AD, he returned to the football sidelines three years ago as the head coach and helped guide the Spartans to a regional final berth last season.
