High schools roundup.

Having lost five of their first six games while residing in perhaps the toughest district in the nation, the 2018 season has not been kind to coach Daryle Heidleburg and his Norland football team.

But things got a little better on Friday afternoon when the Vikings traveled to Southwest High School for a non-district contest and put a 47-3 beatdown on an Eagles team that came into the game with a 4-1 record.

“Wow, we really needed something like this today for sure,” said Heidleburg. “We’ve been battling a lot of injuries and of course dealing with our black and blue district, but today was a big game against a team with a very good record so it felt good to come out and play so well. We just have to see if we can go out there and somehow take it off the sheet and win out.”

Norland improved to 2-5 and with the state’s new points system in place, would need to win its final three games, one of which is against district titan Northwestern along with HML and Mater Academy. A 5-5 mark, considering how many points they would garner for the tough schedule they’ve played which also includes IMG Academy, might be enough to get them into the top eight in the region.

Senior quarterback Deon Jones was the Vikings’ big hitter on Friday. All Jones did was fire a near-perfect game, completing 11-of-12 passes for 246 yards and six touchdown passes. And he did it all in the first half as he staked his team to a 40-0 halftime lead before removing his shoulder pads to take off the second half, which went fast with a running clock.

“Yeah, that was a lot of fun out there today and it felt good because it’s been a pretty tough year for us so far,” said Jones, who has had very little interest from Football Bowl Subdivision schools but said that he’s on Kent State’s radar. “Today was really important because we know we’ve got to get a run together and win a bunch of games if we want to try and make the playoffs.”

Jones’ scores went for 60 and 7 yards to Daryle Riggins, 45 and 9 yards to Anthony Johnson, 37 yards to Robert McMims and 54 yards to Tyrese Cooper. Linebacker Jalen Jinks had a 25-yard interception return for a score for Norland’s only second-half touchdown.
