A man killed a coworker by bashing his head multiple times with a large sledgehammer at a Broward marine manufacturing company Wednesday morning, according to authorities.
Bryan A. Menocal faces one count of second-degree murder, Hollywood police said. The 31-year-old Deerfield Beach resident remained behind bars Thursday afternoon at the Broward County Main Jail.
Around 6:45 a.m., officers were called about a “suspicious incident” at Wärtsilä North America Inc., 2900 SW 42nd St. in Hollywood. There they found a man’s body face down on the floor in a pool of blood.
According to Menocal’s arrest report, he attacked his coworker and, holding the sledgehammer, went into the office of another employee and admitted to killing his colleague before exiting the facility. Following the attack, several employees searched the building and found the victim in a fuel room.
Nearly two hours after the 911 call, the Broward Sheriff’s Office notified Hollywood police that it had detained Menocal at 1701 NW Second Street in Deerfield Beach. He was later taken to the Hollywood Police Department, where he spoke with detectives. What he told them was redacted from his arrest report.
Authorities didn’t release additional information.
In a statement, the marine company said it was “very saddened” about the man’s death.
“Our deepest condolences go to the family of the deceased worker,” the statement said. “The facility remains closed and the authorities are investigating the incident.”
