A Maryland high school went into lockdown Wednesday morning after police said they received reports of “multiple serious assaults.”

Two students were taken to hospitals after being stabbed at Annapolis High School, WJZ reported.

The Anne Arundel County Police Department later said activities on the campus had gotten back to normal, and seven people were facing charges in connection with the incident.

“There is no active threat at the school,” officials said just after 10 a.m. Wednesday. “There will be a strong police presence remaining at the school.”

Around 8:45 a.m., school resource officers saw a fight near a staircase and disarmed a minor, taking him into custody, according to Lt. Jacklyn Davis, spokesperson for the Anne Arundel County Police Department.

“This is incredibly unfortunate and unacceptable in our schools,” Anne Arundel County Public Schools superintendent George Arlotto said during a news conference.

Earlier on Wednesday, school officials in a statement told parents about “several fights” and asked them to avoid picking up their children, as no one was allowed to enter or leave the building, WBAL reported.

As of about 9:20 a.m., the Anne Arundel Police Department on Twitter said it had “numerous units” at the high school.

Arlotto said he didn’t know how the knife got into the school. The building has an entrance with a security check but doesn’t have metal detectors, according to the superintendent.

Russ Davies, spokesperson for the Anne Arundel County Fire Department, told McClatchy News one of the people who was hospitalized had a “possibly serious” but not life-threatening injury to the hand. The other person’s injury was described as “minor.”

The case was still under investigation as of about 11 a.m., officials said.

The Anne Arundel County school district didn’t immediately respond to McClatchy News’ requests for additional information on Wednesday.
